Adventurer Day Recap

Walking with Jesus: A Recap of World Adventurer Day at Downsview

Against a backdrop of proud parents, gleaming uniforms, and the joyful hum of a sanctuary in celebration, the Downsview Seventh-day Adventist Church hosted a stirring World Adventurer Day this past Sabbath. The air was thick with the spirit of youthful devotion as the Morningstar Adventurer Club took center stage, embodying the theme “Walking with Jesus.” As a vital ministry for children ages 4 to 10, the club demonstrated that the journey of faith is a path best taken with a best friend in Christ, one step at a time.

Foundation of the Faith: The Pledge and Law

The program opened with a crisp formal processional and a stirring rendition of the National Anthem. The sanctuary felt the weight of the moment as the Adventurers stood at attention to recite the Pledge and Law. To bring these foundational principles to life, the children performed a series of “human interest” skits illustrating how the Adventurer Law functions in the real world.

In a charming demonstration of being “pure,” a young Adventurer named Izzy was presented with the choice between candy and a healthy apple; she chose the fruit, reminding the congregation that the body is a temple. Another demonstration featured Josiah, who showed the importance of being “true” by honestly reporting that he had been given two items rather than one. These practical lessons were underscored by the club’s guiding principles:

The Adventurer Law Jesus can help me to be:

  • Obedient
  • Pure
  • True
  • Kind
  • Respectful
  • Attentive
  • Helpful
  • Cheerul
  • Thoughtful
  • Reverent

Family Blessing Ceremony: A Consecration for the Future

A deeply moving highlight of the day was the Family Blessing Service. This ceremony allowed parents and guardians to affirm the value of their children in the eyes of God, promising to stand by them through every trial. The service centered on the transition of three young men, whose personal stories provided a powerful testimony to God’s providence:

  • Mason: Having migrated to the community only one year ago, Mason was celebrated for his courageous transition into the club. Described as possessing an “eagle-like” spirit, he was honored for his willingness to learn and his readiness to soar into new spiritual challenges.
  • Nicholas: A member of the “Helping Hand” class, Nicholas’s very birth was a story of divine timing. He arrived during a fierce ice storm on March 24, 2016; his parents received a 4:00 a.m. “notice” from him and barely made it to the hospital before the storm hit, with Nicholas arriving at 12:15 p.m. Appropriately named “Victory of the People,” Nicholas is a straight-A student and a phenomenal athlete, recently placing first in the 60m, 100m, and 400m track events. His character was described as a blend of a “Tiger” (strength and loyalty) and a “Dolphin” (joy and humor).
  • Darian: A “bundle of energy” who has been sharing the Word through preaching since the age of six, Darian was affectionately introduced by his brother, as his “favorite brother,” even if he can be “annoying” during practice. Known for his love of baking bread and arts and crafts, Darian’s passion for the Gospel and his caring heart for his friends were highlighted as hallmarks of his character.

The ceremony concluded with a “Family Pledge,” where parents and children committed to a life of mutual love, spiritual help, and the grace of forgiveness.

Feature Presentation: “The Enoch Experience”

The spiritual centerpiece of the day was a “podcast-style” presentation titled “The Enoch Experience,” featuring Nicholas Smith and Darian Manners in a dynamic Q&A with Adventurer club teacher Everol Smith. The dialogue explored the life of Enoch, the man who walked so closely with God that he never saw death.

The boys shared several profound theological insights:

  • The Catalyst of Fatherhood: They noted that Enoch began his serious walk at age 65—which was “young adulthood” in those days—and that the birth of his son, Methuselah, was the event that changed his perspective on God forever.
  • Consistency is Key: Enoch’s walk lasted 300 years, an ongoing, continuous action rather than a one-time event.
  • The Translation: Because he walked so closely with God, Enoch was “translated”—taken directly to heaven. Darian explained this through a relatable analogy: “If my best friend goes to the gym every day, eventually I’m going to end up at the gym too.” They linked this to other biblical examples, such as Elisha following Elijah or the disciples following Jesus.

To make the “Enoch Experience” accessible to their peers, the boys provided a “List of Five” for walking with God today:

  1. Prayer: Starting the day with a simple “Good morning, God.”
  2. Bible Study: Even reading just one verse a day.
  3. Kindness: Being genuinely kind, especially when others are annoying.
  4. Obedience: Nicholas personally testified to this, noting, “When I listen to my parents, things go way better for me.”
  5. Service: Helping others simply because it’s the right thing to do.

Conclusion: A Call to Walk

World Adventurer Day at Downsview reminded us that “Walking with Jesus” is a lifestyle that transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. Whether you are starting at age four or age sixty-five, the invitation remains the same. As our young speakers taught us through the story of Enoch, your company shapes your destination.

Don’t wait until you have everything figured out. Following the example of Mason, Nicholas, and Darian, we invite you to start your own “Enoch Experience” today. Take that first step, say that first prayer, and keep walking—one day at a time—until we all walk with Him in Zion.
