At Downsview Seventh-day Adventist Church, we believe that true religion is practical and that we are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus in our local community. Our Community Services Ministry is driven by the conviction that we must “rescue the perishing and care for the dying,” meeting the physical needs of our neighbors as a way to open their hearts to God’s love,. Whether it is through initiatives like “Corona Kindness,” where members deliver groceries to those isolating, or simply checking in on the vulnerable, we strive to ensure that no one in our sphere of influence feels forgotten or alone,,. We honor the legacy of dedicated leaders like Sister Burke, whose passion for service laid a strong foundation for our outreach efforts, reminding us that we are called to serve those outside our walls.
Our ministry extends beyond the sanctuary to touch the lives of the marginalized, the sick, and the elderly. We actively engage in visitation ministries, such as our faithful service at the nursing home on Finch Avenue, bringing comfort and companionship to seniors who may not be able to attend services,. We also organize practical support initiatives, having hosted free tax clinics and ESL classes in the past to empower our community members. Furthermore, we believe in the dignity of every individual, organizing efforts to distribute fresh food to those living on the streets—providing high-quality items like grapes and apples—because we believe every person deserves to be treated with the love of Christ,.
Ultimately, our goal is to be “Good Samaritans” who do not pass by on the other side but stop to help those who are hurting,. We encourage every member to view themselves as a minister, realizing that a simple act of kindness—like helping a neighbor with groceries or mowing a lawn—can be a powerful testimony of the gospel,. By combining the “health message” with social service, we aim to offer a holistic ministry that restores hope and points people to the ultimate Provider, Jesus Christ,.
