Reflections in the Mirror: Recapping the Downsview Evangelistic Series
For two weeks, the sanctuary of the Downsview Seventh-day Adventist Church was transformed into a place of deep introspection and spiritual renewal. From April 11 to April 25, 2026, our community gathered for “The Mirror,” an evangelistic series designed to challenge our perceptions of faith and conduct. By looking into the perfect law of liberty, we sought to see ourselves as God sees us—not to dwell on our flaws, but to recognize our desperate need for a Savior.
The core metaphor of the series, drawn from the preaching of our pastoral team, presented the Ten Commandments as a spiritual mirror. As Pastor Michelle Clarke reminded us on the opening night, a mirror serves a vital but limited purpose: it reveals the “spots” and “specks” on the face, but it possesses no power to wash them away. The Law, as the holy transcript of God’s character, points us to our deficiency so that we might flee to the cleansing blood of Jesus.
Throughout the series, we were reminded that the Decalogue is not merely a list of prohibitions, but a summary of a moral and ethical life founded on love. As we examined our reflection, one recurring question guided our journey:
“Mirror, mirror on the wall, what do you have to reveal to us all?”
The Visionary Voices: Our Lead Speakers
The series was anchored by the Spirit-led preaching of our pastoral team. They shared the weight of the Word with a balance of theological depth and celebratory warmth.

Journeying Through the Ten Words
The series meticulously navigated the Hadibro (the 10 Sayings), providing a holistic view of our duties to God and our fellow man.
Commandments 1–4: Our Relationship with God
These first “words” establish the vertical connection between the Creator and the created, emphasizing exclusivity and worship.
- Exclusivity: God reintroduces Himself as Yahweh, our Deliverer, inviting us into a committed, marriage-like relationship where He is our first and only priority.
- True Worship: We are called to worship the invisible, ever-present God in spirit and truth, rejecting the physical substitutes that distract our hearts from His glory.
- Wearing His Brand: To take God’s name in vain is more than a word; it is a failure to represent His “brand” with integrity in our daily conduct.
- The Sabbath Date: The Seventh-day Sabbath is a hallowed, weekly “date” with our Creator—a sanctuary in time that acknowledges His authority over our lives.
Commandments 5–10: Our Relationship with Neighbors
The final six commandments focus on the horizontal plane, governing how the Remnant interacts with society and family.
- Foundation of Respect: Honoring our parents is the foundational principle for all respect within the church, the workplace, and the wider community.
- The Sanctity of Life: We must reject the destructive weapon of the tongue, understanding that character assassination through gossip is a form of spiritual murder.
- Sacred Intimacy: Sex is God’s sacred gift reserved for the covenant of marriage; we are called to flee from the “creeping compromises” of sexual immorality.
- Integrity in Stewardship: Respecting the possessions of others requires a heart free from the small thefts and compromises that erode our Christian witness.
- The Standard of Truth: Bearing false witness is an abomination to the God of truth; His people are called to be speakers of truth in a world of deception.
- The Contented Heart: Covetousness is a matter of the heart, warning us that true peace comes from God’s provision rather than desiring our neighbor’s blessings.
Holistic Healing: Health Nuggets and Community Joy
“The Mirror” series recognized that spiritual health is inextricably linked to physical well-being. Each evening, under the guidance of the Great Physician, we featured “Health Nuggets” providing practical, natural remedies:
- High Blood Pressure: Attendees were encouraged to increase water intake to naturally thin the blood, reduce salt, and embrace a diet rich in fiber and potassium.
- Arthritis: The anti-inflammatory power of ginger was highlighted, alongside simple hand exercises like “playing the piano” to maintain joint flexibility.
- Poor Circulation: Burdock root was identified as a powerful tool for removing toxins and widening blood vessels to support healthy flow.
- The Power of Castor Oil: A special highlight was the use of warm Castor oil packs. When applied consistently, these packs serve as a potent remedy for joint pain and have been known to help break up and shrink tumors.
The finale was a festive occasion marked by “paparazziness” and the joy of community stewardship. We celebrated the commitment of our youth, awarding them tablets for their dedication. The grand prize—a 40-inch “Downsview TV”—was presented to Sister Leonora Hancle (Sister Plum), who exemplified the spirit of evangelism by bringing more than 20 guests to the series.
The Ultimate Victory: Seven Souls for Christ
While the gifts and health tips provided much-needed support, the ultimate victory of the series was found in the spiritual harvest. The pastors described this evangelistic effort as the “first leg” of a mission relay race. Just as the first runner must “make the bend” and maintain a strong position to pass the baton, Downsview has successfully completed this initial phase of reaching our community.
We praise God that the series culminated in the baptism of seven (7) individuals who chose to surrender their lives to Jesus Christ, choosing to reflect His image above all else.
